FAUX FINISH
The word 'faux' means 'false', and the term 'Faux Finish' refers to the technique of using paint to create the illusion of making one material look like another.

For example, I can use paint and varnishes on a regular sheet rock wall to make it look like it is marble, or even 'Venetian Plaster':

Other possibilities include painting a wall or a piece of furniture, so that it looks like leather.

 

 

TROMP L'OEIL
Pronounced 'trump-loy', it literally means 'fool the eye'.

Tromp L'oeil is the art of painting realistically, so as to create an illusion!
